Speaking during an interview with television stations, Jonathan described the migration trend as alarming, stressing that Nigeria risks losing some of its brightest and most productive minds if urgent action is not taken.
According to the former president, while relocation and migration are common practices around the world, the massive number of Nigerian youths leaving the country has become a worrying issue that could negatively affect national development.
Jonathan also lamented the treatment many Nigerians reportedly face abroad, saying the level of disrespect and hardship encountered by some young citizens outside the country should not be ignored.
His comments have since triggered massive reactions online, with many Nigerians debating whether the country still offers enough opportunities for young people to thrive.
While some agreed with Jonathan’s concerns and called for improved living conditions, jobs, and security, others argued that many youths are leaving because of economic hardship, unemployment, and uncertainty about the future.
The “Japa” trend has continued to dominate conversations across Nigeria in recent years, especially among graduates and skilled professionals seeking better education, healthcare, career growth, and stable living conditions overseas.
Jonathan’s remarks have now reignited discussions about brain drain, youth empowerment, and the urgent need for policies that can restore confidence in the country’s future.
