Islamic scholar and political activist Dr. Usman Bugaje has accused the Nigerian Senate, led by President Godswill Akpabio, of consistently undermining democracy through deception and poor legislative conduct.
Speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Bugaje emphasized the urgent need to amend the Electoral Act to ensure transparency, especially by mandating real-time electronic transmission of election results.
He noted that while the House of Representatives and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) support this move, the Senate has been resistant.
“This is necessary after the Supreme Court ruling — results must be electronically available immediately so everyone can see where votes are coming from. Yet, the Senate is always caught cheating or deceiving Nigerians,” he said.
Bugaje also criticized the Senate’s track record on lawmaking, pointing to past failures in tax legislation and budget processes, which have created confusion over multiple budgets and hindered economic planning.
He warned, “Businesses cannot plan because they don’t know which budget will be implemented. The Senate leadership has become one of the biggest problems in this country, and Nigerians are not ready for anything less than full transparency in elections.”
