Kwara Massacre: Survivor Describes Horrors as Death Toll Rises to 150

A survivor of the deadly attack on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara State, has recounted the traumatic events, revealing he has been unable to contact his family days after the incident.

Danjuma Bagu, who sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh and is receiving treatment at Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH), said he fled during the attack and has not heard from his wife and six children.

“As I speak with you now, I don’t know if my wife and six children are alive. I have not heard from them since Tuesday, after the incident. I also lost my phone,” Bagu told Daily Trust.

The attack, which took place last Tuesday, involved approximately 200 gunmen on motorcycles, who stormed the community shooting sporadically. Community leaders confirmed that the death toll has risen to 150, with search and rescue efforts still ongoing.

Another survivor, Joshua Dame, a farmer from Plateau State, described his narrow escape. He said he encountered the attackers while traveling from his farm to town around 3 p.m.

“They shot my friend and killed him instantly. A bullet entered my stomach, came out through my right side, and broke my right hand,” Dame recounted.

He said he pretended to be dead to avoid further attacks, and the gunmen eventually left, taking his motorcycle and continuing their rampage through the town, killing and burning everything in sight.

Badly injured, Dame crawled into the forest and hid until soldiers rescued him the following morning.

“I crawled inside the forest from when I was shot till the time the army came over, 8 hours in a pool of my blood, and tried to keep my voice low despite the pain because I don’t know whether they are still around. I don’t know how I survived, honestly,” he said.

Both survivors appealed to the government for urgent assistance, noting that many victims were left with nothing after the attack.

This tragic incident has drawn national attention, highlighting ongoing security challenges in rural communities in Kwara State.
