Against all odds — and against all weather logic — Nigeria has arrived at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, and yes, the green-white-green is flying on snow again.
This time, Team Nigeria showed up with one man, one mission, and plenty courage.
Meet Samuel Ikpefan, Nigeria’s lone warrior on ice and snow, representing the country in cross-country skiing at the Winter Games holding from February 6 to 22, 2026.
The Nigeria Olympic Committee confirmed Ikpefan as the nation’s only athlete at the Games — a role he knows very well. He also carried Nigeria’s flag at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, making this his second Olympic appearance.
What makes his journey wild?
👉 The man trains for snow sports while coming from a tropical country with zero snow.
Despite the obvious challenges, Ikpefan is competing in individual skiing events, with hopes of expanding Nigeria’s tiny but growing footprint in winter sports.
Nigeria’s appearance continues a quiet but historic trend that started years ago:
- Simidele Adeagbo broke ground in skeleton racing in 2018
- Nigeria’s bobsleigh team shocked the world at PyeongChang
- Now Ikpefan keeps the torch burning on ice
Africa, as a whole, has 15 athletes from eight countries at the Games, including Kenya, Morocco, South Africa, Eritrea, and Nigeria — all defying stereotypes one slope at a time.
No medals yet — the Games are just beginning — but for many Nigerians, the real win is presence, pride, and proof that borders don’t limit dreams.
From heat to ice, from sand to snow — Nigeria dey there.
