Another bloody night. Heavy losses. Silence follows.
Fresh tragedy has hit Nigeria’s counter-insurgency war as fighters linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a deadly assault on a military base in Borno State, leaving several soldiers feared dead.
The attack reportedly happened at a military formation in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area, where heavily armed militants struck with force, firing endlessly and overwhelming troops stationed at the base.
Security sources revealed that the assault led to multiple casualties, affecting both Nigerian soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF). While the exact number of fatalities remains unclear, insiders confirmed that losses were significant.
During the raid, the attackers reportedly set armoured tanks and gun trucks ablaze, destroyed several military vehicles, and escaped with a large cache of weapons and ammunition. Shortly after the incident, ISWAP released a statement claiming responsibility and circulated a video allegedly showing its fighters shooting towards the military facility.
This attack comes barely days after another deadly ambush in the state, where seven military personnel — including a newly promoted Lieutenant Colonel — were k!lled while travelling from Maiduguri to Damasak. That convoy was reportedly hit with explosives and intense gunfire, leaving several soldiers wounded and others still unaccounted for.
Since the death of former Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, ISWAP has continued to strengthen its grip around the Lake Chad region, absorbing defectors and expanding its operational reach.
Despite repeated official assurances that the insurgency has been largely contained, attacks like this continue to raise serious questions, especially as losses are often downplayed.
The conflict in the North-East has already claimed over 100,000 lives and displaced millions across Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa States — and for many residents, the war feels far from over.
Once again, the guns spoke.
And the cost was heavy. ⚠️
