“I’m Not Blocking Your Shine!” — Funke Akindele Claps Back as Kunle Afolayan’s Cinema Rant Sparks Wahala

Nollywood is buzzing, and this one is loud.

Funke Akindele has finally reacted to comments made by filmmaker Kunle Afolayan that many believe were subtle shots at how some cinema blockbusters are promoted — and she didn’t mince words.

It all started after Kunle Afolayan openly questioned the stress, hype, and marketing style behind today’s big cinema numbers. While speaking at different film-related events, he made it clear that massive box office figures don’t impress him if the filmmaker doesn’t personally feel the profit.

According to him, hitting ₦1 billion or even ₦2 billion at the box office means little if the actual returns don’t reflect the noise. He also hinted that he isn’t comfortable with promotional tactics that involve constant skits, costume changes, or “performing” online just to sell a movie.

In his words, he wondered how people like Funke Akindele and others keep up with such energy-driven promotions, admitting flatly that he can’t — and won’t — do it.

That statement didn’t sit quietly.

Funke Akindele took to her Instagram story and fired back, making it clear she’s not responsible for anyone else’s journey or struggles. She suggested jealousy might be fueling the narrative and emphasized that no one is stopping anyone from succeeding.

Her message was simple but sharp: everyone should face their own lane. If a method doesn’t work for you, create another one. Hire professionals. Innovate. Adapt. But don’t blame others for doing what works for them.

She stressed that the space is big enough for everyone to win, adding that she’s focused on her own path, trusting God, and staying unbothered by comparisons.

This exchange comes at a time when Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham have been breaking serious box office records, redefining what commercial success looks like in Nollywood.

One thing is clear — the conversation around success, strategy, and ego in the film industry is far from over.

And Nollywood fans?
They’re watching closely. 👀🔥
