Nollywood powerhouse Funke Akindele has opened up about the intense sacrifices she made behind the scenes while building one of the biggest brands in African entertainment.
Speaking during the International Women’s Day event organised by Wema Bank, the award-winning actress revealed that success didn’t come easily. According to her, she had to sacrifice her social life and isolate herself for nearly two years just to grow the iconic Jenifa brand.

Akindele disclosed that during that period, she avoided parties, stayed away from social gatherings, and focused completely on her work.
She explained that she practically locked herself inside her residence in Amen Estate, dedicating her time to writing scripts, producing, directing, acting as her famous character Jenifa, and supervising every aspect of the production.
The filmmaker admitted that many of her colleagues misunderstood her actions at the time.
According to her, some of them even labelled her a “sadist” because she constantly declined invitations to events and social outings.

However, they had no idea she was quietly laying the foundation for what would eventually become a massive entertainment empire.
Akindele noted that the journey demanded her time, comfort, and emotional strength. She explained that while people now celebrate her success and admire the billions her movies generate, very few truly understand the personal cost that came with reaching that level.
She added that there were moments she felt exhausted and wished she could relax, but she constantly reminded herself of her goals and pushed forward.
The actress also spoke about the emotional challenges she faced while working so intensely on her projects. She said being deeply involved in every stage of production made her vulnerable, especially when some aspects didn’t turn out as planned and critics began to attack her work.
Despite the criticism, she said enduring those difficult moments helped shape her resilience and contributed to her growth as a filmmaker.
Today, the actress is widely regarded as one of the most successful filmmakers in Nigeria. Her recent cinema project, Behind The Scenes, reportedly shattered box-office records by earning over ₦2.1 billion within just one month, further cementing her reputation as the country’s “box-office queen.”
Her achievements have also earned recognition from institutions such as the National Film and Video Censors Board, which honoured her for her consistency and impact in the Nigerian film industry.
Reflecting on her journey, Akindele emphasised that success is rarely instant. She said her story was built on years of learning, prayer, strategy, and the willingness to constantly reassess and improve.
After more than 27 years in the movie industry, the actress says discipline, persistence, and belief in one’s vision remain the true ingredients for lasting success. 🎬✨
