Political analyst Jide Ojo has suggested that Peter Obi may leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections if he fails to secure the party’s presidential ticket.
Speaking on Channels TV’s The Morning Brief, Ojo predicted that Obi could lose the ADC ticket to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, particularly if the party conducts indirect primaries, which may favor candidates with deep financial resources.
“Assuming, without conceding, that Atiku emerges in a free and fair ADC primary, I can see Peter Obi likely leaving the party for another platform,” Ojo said.
Ojo added that Atiku’s interest in the ADC ticket isn’t just about candidacy, but also influencing who gets the nomination, fueling concerns that he could outspend Obi in indirect primaries.
Despite this, Obi is said to command significant support. Ojo noted that when Obi moved from the Labour Party to ADC on December 31, 2025, a large number of southeastern senators, House members, and state legislators defected with him, unlike Atiku’s previous moves.
“Peter Obi’s declaration that he will be on the 2027 ballot signals he isn’t ready to play second fiddle to anyone,” Ojo emphasized.
