INEC Shakes 2027 Race: Presidential Election Moved to January

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially moved the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections forward to January 16, 2027.

The commission explained that the revision was necessary to align with the new legal framework under the Electoral Act 2026. Earlier, the presidential vote was scheduled for late February, with state-level elections in March.

According to Malam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the schedule has been reviewed and realigned to ensure full compliance with the updated law.

The Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are now set for Saturday, February 6, 2027.

This move is expected to intensify the scramble among political parties, especially opposition groups, who now face tighter deadlines to meet compliance requirements and mobilize support ahead of the polls.
