The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed down strict sanctions to Algeria following multiple post-match incidents involving players, officials, and supporters after their AFCON 2025 quarter-final clash with Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
In a ruling released on Wednesday, CAF’s disciplinary board found the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) guilty of misconduct that occurred during and after the heated encounter, leading to both sporting and financial penalties.
As part of the sanctions, goalkeeper Luca Zidane has been suspended for two matches, which he will serve during the AFCON 2027 qualifying series.
Defender Rafik Belghali was handed a four-match ban, with two matches suspended, meaning he will immediately miss two competitive fixtures unless further disciplinary issues arise.
In addition to player suspensions, CAF fined the Algerian FA $100,000, citing improper conduct by players, team officials, and supporters, which the body described as damaging to the image of African football.
The decision sends a strong warning ahead of future AFCON tournaments, reinforcing CAF’s stance on discipline, sportsmanship, and respect for match officials.
