Drama in Court: NBA Blasts Judge Over “Kneel Down” Order to Lawyer

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned a controversial courtroom incident involving Justice Mohammed Umar.

The judge reportedly ordered a lawyer to kneel in open court during proceedings linked to activist Omoyele Sowore’s case.

 What Happened?

During the hearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja, tension rose after a disagreement between the judge and Sowore’s lead counsel, Marshall Abubakar, over court proceedings.

At some point, the judge allegedly instructed the lawyer to:  “Come out and kneel down”

Other lawyers quickly intervened, pleading for calm before the session was adjourned.

 NBA Reacts

The NBA didn’t hold back, describing the action as:

  • Unacceptable
  • Not recognised under Nigerian law
  • Below judicial standards

According to NBA President, Afam Osigwe:

“The courtroom is a temple of justice… judicial authority must be exercised within legal limits.”

 Big Issue

The association stressed that while judges have the power to maintain order:

  • That power is not absolute
  • Public humiliation is not a lawful punishment

Why It Matters

This incident has sparked serious concerns about:

  • Respect for the legal profession
  • Proper courtroom conduct
  • Protection of due process and rights
