The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has confirmed a violent attack on its officers by suspected armed drug traffickers in Ogun State.
The incident occurred on Thursday at Akokoro, Iwoye in Imeko-Afon Local Government Area, according to Zakaria Chado, spokesperson for the Ogun 1 Area Command. Officers were acting on credible intelligence when they intercepted a 12-tyre truck suspected of carrying a large consignment of illicit drugs and other prohibited items.
Before reinforcements could arrive, the suspects mobilized a group of armed hoodlums and launched a coordinated assault. The attackers reportedly blocked nine strategic access points and fired at officers, disabling a Customs patrol vehicle by shooting its tyres.
Two Customs personnel were critically injured during the attack and are currently receiving intensive medical care. The smugglers escaped with the intercepted truck.
Chado confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify, track, and apprehend everyone involved in the violent ambush.
This incident highlights the increasing risks faced by law enforcement personnel in anti-smuggling operations across the country.
