Yeni Kuti, daughter of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has urged restraint amid the ongoing public disagreement involving Grammy-winning singer Wizkid and the Kuti family, warning that the controversy reflects poorly on Nigeria rather than on her late father’s legacy.
Speaking during an appearance on TVC’s Your View, Yeni said she holds Wizkid in high regard and recalled their long-standing relationship, dating back to his early performances at the New Afrika Shrine during Felabration.
She expressed disappointment that the situation escalated publicly, noting that disputes of such nature often harm people who are not directly involved.
According to Yeni, she deliberately avoided taking sides in the disagreement, stressing that public confrontations only deepen divisions and distract from more meaningful conversations.
She called on all parties to resolve their differences privately, especially as Nigeria prepares to celebrate Fela’s enduring influence on the global stage, including international recognition through the Grammy Awards.
Yeni also questioned why Fela continues to attract criticism decades after his death, arguing that the continued relevance of his name is itself proof of his lasting impact and greatness.
“We are one people,” she said, warning that internal conflicts among prominent figures risk damaging Nigeria’s image abroad.
She concluded by urging those involved to separate personal disagreements from Fela’s legacy, emphasising that conflicts among the living should not be allowed to overshadow the contributions of someone whose place in history is already secured.
