The administration of US President Donald Trump has announced plans to suspend billions of dollars in foreign assistance tied to programmes promoting gender ideology and diversity-related policies.
A senior US government official disclosed the decision on Thursday, January 22, explaining that Washington intends to prevent public funds from supporting initiatives abroad that conflict with the administration’s policy stance.
Policy Expansion
The move expands the long-standing Mexico City Policy, originally introduced during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, which bars US funding for foreign organisations involved in abortion services or advocacy.
Under the revised framework, foreign aid will now also be withheld from programmes that promote gender ideology and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
According to the official, the aim is to ensure American taxpayer funds are not used to support abortion-related activities or policies viewed by the administration as discriminatory or ideologically driven.
Billions At Stake
The expanded policy could affect over $30 billion in potential foreign aid — a significant increase from the roughly $8 billion previously impacted under the original rule.
However, the full scope of the policy’s impact remains uncertain, as the Trump administration has already implemented broad reductions across several foreign assistance programmes.
USAID And Broader Cuts
The government has also curtailed the influence of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), historically the world’s largest public aid donor, further tightening America’s foreign aid footprint.
Consistent Policy Direction
Trump has consistently opposed transgender rights during both his campaign and presidency, reversing multiple policies introduced under former President Joe Biden.
His administration has taken steps to bar transgender girls from participating in female sports categories and eliminated the option of an “X” gender marker on US passports.
