Nollywood actress Juliana Olayode, popularly known as Toyo Baby, has strongly criticized celebrities and social media users who are turning the viral “Holy Spirit, carry me” trend into what she describes as careless entertainment.

Taking to Instagram, the actress said she has become increasingly uncomfortable with how some people are using the phrase in captions and videos that make light of something she believes should be treated with deep respect.

According to Olayode, asking the Holy Spirit for guidance or help is a powerful and meaningful prayer. However, she expressed concern over captions she has seen online joking that the Holy Spirit refused to “carry” someone because of their body size or other humorous reasons.

The actress said such comments make her cringe because they reduce something sacred to mere internet jokes.

She urged people, especially fellow Christians, to remember who they are referring to when they mention the Holy Spirit and to avoid turning sacred expressions into punchlines simply to attract attention online.

Olayode also pointed out that while people enjoy joking and creating fun content on social media, there should be boundaries when it comes to spiritual matters. In her view, faith and reverence should not be sacrificed for trends or viral entertainment.

The trend has recently gained massive popularity on TikTok, where users create videos portraying the Holy Spirit as a figure appearing in bird-like form to “carry” them away.

Several celebrities have joined the trend, including Funke Akindele, Mercy Johnson, Mercy Aigbe, Uche Ogbodo, Uche Elendu, and content creator Kiekie.

Beyond the current controversy, Olayode has previously opened up about deeply personal struggles, including a period where she battled depression and suicidal thoughts for nearly three years before finding healing through her faith.

The actress says her message is not about condemning people but simply about encouraging believers to treat sacred things with honour and seriousness, even in the age of social media trends.
