Big changes are unfolding in Nigeria’s economic team as President Bola Tinubu moves to reshape his cabinet.
The President has nominated Dr. Taiwo Oyedele as the new Minister of State for Finance, replacing Dr. Doris Anite-Uzoka.
Official Nomination Sent to Senate
The nomination was formally transmitted to the Senate in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The development was disclosed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
If confirmed, Oyedele will step directly into one of the most strategic economic positions in the administration.
Anite-Uzoka Gets New Portfolio
Meanwhile, Doris Anite-Uzoka has been reassigned to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning as Minister of State — marking her third portfolio under the current administration.
The redeployment signals a broader internal restructuring within the government’s economic management team.
Why Taiwo Oyedele?
Before his nomination, Oyedele chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, inaugurated in August 2023.
Under his leadership, the committee spearheaded a sweeping review of Nigeria’s tax structure, merging over 60 different taxes into fewer than 10 streamlined laws. One of the standout reforms included a zero-income tax threshold for Nigerians earning N800,000 or less annually.
At 50, the Ondo State-born economist and public policy expert is widely regarded as one of the key architects behind recent tax reforms aimed at simplifying compliance and boosting economic efficiency.
What Happens Next?
The Senate will now deliberate on his nomination and decide whether to confirm him.
With Nigeria’s economic landscape facing mounting pressure, all eyes are on how this appointment could influence fiscal direction and financial policy moving forward.
