A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has cautioned against replacing Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 elections, describing such moves as politically risky and potentially destabilizing for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid.
Mumuni, a former member of the Tinubu/Shettima 2023 campaign intelligence team, said decisions on the party’s ticket should be guided by political calculations, not sentiment. He noted that the North currently lacks a Christian candidate with nationwide appeal strong enough to complement Tinubu’s base.
“Decisions of this magnitude must be guided by political calculations and electoral realities, not sentiment,” Mumuni said, emphasizing Shettima’s loyalty and the importance of continuity for political stability.
He also advised the APC to explore alternative ways of promoting inclusivity, such as strategic appointments of qualified individuals, rather than altering the vice-presidential slot, which could risk internal tensions, policy disruptions, and uncertainty among the electorate.
Mumuni concluded that retaining the Tinubu–Shettima ticket remains the most pragmatic approach as preparations for the 2027 elections accelerate, urging stakeholders to prioritize unity, cohesion, and governance delivery.
